A tough die-cast magnesium alloy body and fog-free, waterproof construction provide exceptional performance down to -20°C or lower. Get up close and explore hidden treasures with the HG L (High Grade Light) series from Nikon. Designed for unparallelled performance and comfort, the latest lineup of HG L binoculars feature Nikon's superior optical technologies and finely tuned mechanics to reveal subtle details you’d otherwise miss. Lightweight, yet extremely durable, these versatile sports optics are not only suited for outdoor pursuits such as birdwatching, marine sports and hiking, but specific models also cover use for astronomy, spectator sports, travel, or indoors at the museum or theatre. With this much scope the widely acclaimed HG L series are the perfect choice when only the best will do.Supreme PerformanceWith an advanced lens and prism construction the HG L series comprises a range of models with objective diameters up to 42mm to suit an array of situations. The high-quality roof prisms employ an optical path that optimises use of the compact dimensions and together with a phase-correction coating deliver high resolution images. For brighter images, a high-reflection silver coating is used to reduce the loss of light within the prism, and Nikon’s mulitilayer lens coating ensures superior light transmission resulting in bright, sharp images even in poor light conditions. This outstanding optical design is completed by the use of a field flattener lens in the eyepiece that delivers images that are sharp and clear all the way to the lens periphery.Categories covered by the HG L SeriesBirdwatching, Nature watching7x-10x magnification is most suitable for nature viewing with 8x-12x models recommended for wildlife at a greater distance. Whilst looking for pocket binoculars I was bewildered by the scope of offerings from many manufacturers. I read reviews on many and narrowed my choice down to a hand-full. I read and re-read the reviews and couldn't make up my mind. So I bit the bullet and bought these from Amazon. My impressions.Pros: Fantastic clear image, from edge to edge. Field of view might be a bit narrow but I feel the flat image negates this somewhat. Feels sturdy in the hand. Not too heavy, but with substance. Fold-able hinge. some of the reviews have mentioned the hinge design as a negative. I find that once set they stay in position until you fold them up. Value for money. I suppose this depends on the price you get them for. I managed to get them for 330 pounds here on Amazon, the cheapest I could find in the UK. I honestly don't think i could have got more 'bang for my buck'.Cons: The case is not up to much. Soft leather and the bins don't fit very well. As an aside the Bins are made in Japan whilst the case is made in China. Make of that what you will. The strap seems to short for me. That's it for the cons.A final word on buying 10x over 8x in this form factor. I don't find shake to be a problem and as I have stated the image is bright and clear, even in woodland on a overcast day.The proof of the pudding is in the eating so with hindsight would I buy the same again given the choice today. Yes, without hesitation.
